the story so far - rain & snow

02/06/09 -as anticipated we have ben unable to have access to the internet in a form that works well. Like NZ the distances are great with thin population and thus a lot of people are on dial up!!
Anyway, here is a brief update.
27/05/09 We arrived in good time at Edin Airport, courtesy of son Andrew. Unfortunately our BM flight was delayed by 45 mins which made our connection time to LHR very tight. Managed to catch the Air Canada flight and had a reasonable flight in an Airbus330 - 7 hours - and landed on time in Toronto. We were met by the Browns which was fortuitous as it was rush hour and we holed out in a nearby restaurant. We have known the Browns for 23 years as our oldest, David, did a Rotary Youth Exchange, with Greg Brown in 1986. We have been meeting up ever since in Scotland, Canada, and Florida. The drive to their house in Cobourg (105km) was hairy with torrential rain on the 401 - we had collected our hire car and drove in convoy which made things a lot easier for our first drive.
28/05/09 - drove up to Port Perry where we met up with Greg, his brother doug, and sister Merrilee, who is a family doctor. She had visited D'dee a few years ago and sat in on one of my surgeries and also met Dave Snadden who is now a prof of Family Medicine in BC. BBQ at Dougs house overlooking the lake and met all the grandchildren. More to follow when we have access again!!!

  2. 29th May. Lunch with the Browns and then 95km north to Bridgenorth to meet up with the Fagans. John had been in practice with me in Cochrane for a year and we had shared many adventures before he left to specialise in ENT. He told me the story of his first day in the practice when he had been shown round by the boss, Phil Bernstein. After "the tour" they had stood on the sidewalk outside the office and John had said "well, thank ypu for the opportunity - when do you want me to start?". Just as he said this someone fell out of an upstirs window across the street, bounced onto an awning over a shop and landed in the street. Calmly, after a short pause, Phil said "Well, I guess right now would be a good time". Evening spent going over old times.
Fri 30th May: Went to Peterborough market and Indian Reservation. Had a VERY, VERY close call when a woman driver pulled across in front of us. How we missed her I don't know. John reduced to a shaking mass in the middle of the road. Lunchn at an Italian restaurant before heading north to Haliburton (105km) to stay with the Barnes - old friends from Cochrane days where Mike was the supervising principle of the primary schools. 2 signs outside his house - "Famus Auther" & "Michael Barnes - book signing". Mike is the author of 19 books and has the Canadian Order of Merit.
Sun 31st May - cold- snow showers - 3C.Guided tour of Haliburton, Minden etc. Went to the Wolf Park in the afternoon where you could view the wolves through a 1 way window - arrived for feeding time and luckily we were'nt on the menu. They made short work of a beaver carcass. Hors d'oevres at an up market B & B and then out for dinner.
1st June Left at 9am to drive to Haileybury (383km)to see Pat & Doug Bernstein (son of Phil, and a retired judge). BBQ in the evening with the twins present whom I had helped deliver 39 years ago!
Tues 2nd June. Cobalt silver mining museum and lunch by Lake Temiskaming (90 miles long).
Wed 3rd June Drive to Cochrane 222km, where we lived for 3 years shortly after we were married. The town now looks very run down and the medical services have collapsed - only 2 GP's and a surgeon, whereas we had 7 GP's and a surgeon!! Had a meal with John & Irene Slater (John was my former partner who is now 78 and in failing health). Good natter about the old times. A tour of the changes in Cochrane and Lake Lillabelle and the bush planes. Staying a the Best Western. Spotted some Sandhill cranes in a field.
Thurs 4th June A tour round our old haunts and then a visit to the Polar Bear park where we watched them feeding. Glass window into diving pool enables you to see them under water. BBQ at Wali O'reilly's whose children I had delivered, and met up with Joan Marwick and Charles Bernstein who has schizophrenia. Nevertheless he was very complimentary about my stitching of his left eyebrow and Kay's kind letter when his mother died.
